Empowering Change: Practical Steps for a Sustainable Business Environment

As climate change becomes an increasingly pressing issue, businesses across all sectors must embrace sustainable practices. To address this need, we partnered with Eco Mantra to host a workshop titled "Sustainable Business Strategies for Low-Carbon Operations." The workshop provided practical guidance on how companies can reduce their carbon footprint, improve operational efficiency, and meet growing consumer demands for sustainability. Held on August 30th, 2024, at HARRIS Hotel Cokroaminoto in Denpasar, Bali, the event brought together industry leaders to explore actionable strategies for implementing low-carbon operations in various sectors.

The Importance of Sustainable Business Strategies

Sustainability is no longer just a trend; it's necessary for businesses looking to thrive in the long term. Adopting low-carbon strategies helps companies reduce their environmental footprint and align with the growing expectations of consumers and regulatory bodies. By integrating sustainable practices into their operations, businesses can drive innovation, improve efficiency, and build a positive brand image that resonates with eco-conscious customers.

The workshop focused on practical, actionable steps that businesses can take to become more sustainable. Here are some of the key strategies discussed:

  1. GHG Accounting

This involves a series of steps to help organizations accurately measure, track, and report their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, ensuring transparency and compliance with international standards.

The first step is evaluating and identifying emission sources. Once identified, the second step is data collection. The third step is building a GHG inventory, followed by the final step of analyzing and reporting the organization’s GHG emissions.

  1. Decarbonization Roadmap

This strategic framework provides guidance on target-setting, GHG reduction assessment, and decarbonization modeling to help organizations achieve their carbon reduction goals in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

It’s ideal for businesses committed to setting and meeting carbon reduction targets. The roadmap establishes a baseline for emissions, creating a pathway for future reductions. This includes developing a reduction action plan, and a beyond-value-chain mitigation plan, with the ultimate goal of achieving SBTi Net Zero by 2050.

The workshop served as a powerful reminder that sustainable business practices are both environmentally responsible and economically advantageous. As the venue partner, HARRIS Hotel conducts responsible practices in their hotel as an example of how the tourism industry can be sustainable in their operation. HARRIS Hotel does this through its eco-friendly initiatives such as energy-efficient lighting, comprehensive waste segregation, proper disposal of recyclable materials, and the use of compostable packaging. Guests are also encouraged to reduce plastic use.

By embracing low-carbon strategies, businesses can play a key role in mitigating climate change while building a more resilient and competitive future. Now is the time for companies to act, turning sustainability into a cornerstone of their operations and contributing to a more sustainable planet for future generations. Together, we can create a lasting impact.
