Showcasing women-led ground-up climate resilience efforts at G20

“..we wanted to show that these are the perfect examples of how a resilient economy is built from the ground-up.”

The 2022’s G20 Summit took place in Bali where Indonesia held its presidency with a big theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”. While the international forum focused on policy coordination in economics and development at the global level, it also offered opportunities for grassroots organizations and communities to amplify their works and contribution to bigger audiences through its side events.

In the event of Future SMEs Village for instance, Women’s Earth Alliance in collaboration with Pratisara Bumi Foundation and Earthly Economic Coalition (Koalisi Ekonomi Membumi) showcased two of the community-led enterprises under the Rural Climate & Economic Resilience (RuCLER) program, Balini Organic and Samaren.

Throughout the 6-days event, Balini Organic which is a social enterprise led by our Indonesian leader, Auditya Sari and Samaren which is led by Raihal Fajri placed their products for visitors to buy. Beyond that, we wanted to show that these are the perfect examples of how a resilient economy is built from the ground-up.

The two leaders created an enterprise based on the economic potential in their rural villages and chose to embrace it collectively with the local and indigenous communities.

“Voices from the local communities at the grassroots level are often unheard. Ironically, they are actually the key actor in determining the success of a commodity. As an entrepreneur, it is our duty to become a bridge and offer solutions that benefit and empower them. That is how everyone and the business will get stronger”

For Balini Organic, Tya works closely with the female cacao farmers community in Jembrana, North Bali to produce energy bars from Bali’s authentic cacao. While for Samaren, Raihal creates a cooperative business model that benefits 100 other women in Bener Meriah village in Aceh by creating an organic arenga palm sugar. These businesses are maintained to have a sustainable supply chain under the RuCLER program conducted by Pratisara Bumi Foundation.
